چکیده

Existing storage stacks are top-heavy and expect little from block storage. As a result, new high-level storage abstractions – and new designs for existing abstractions – are difficult to realize, requiring developers to implement from scratch complex functionality such as failure atomicity and fine-grained concurrency control. In this paper, we argue that pushing transactional isolation into the block store (in addition to atomicity and durability) is both viable and broadly useful, resulting in simpler highlevel storage systems that provide strong semantics without sacrificing performance. We present Isotope, a new block store that supports ACID transactions over block reads and writes. Internally, Isotope uses a new multiversion concurrency control protocol that exploits finegrained, sub-block parallelism in workloads and offers both strict serializability and snapshot isolation guarantees. We implemented several high-level storage systems over Isotope, including two key-value stores that implement the LevelDB API over a hashtable and B-tree, respectively, and a POSIX filesystem. We show that Isotope’s block-level transactions enable systems that are simple (100s of lines of code), robust (i.e., providing ACID guarantees), and fast (e.g., 415 MB/s for random file writes). We also show that these systems can be composed using Isotope, providing applications with transactions across different high-level constructs such as files, directories and key-value pairs.

Proving Isolation Properties for Software Transactional Memory

An algorithm for Software Transactional Memory (STM) is correct if it guarantees a proclaimed degree of isolation between concurrently executing transactions. A correctness proof requires explicit modeling of the effects of transaction bodies and the non-deterministic scheduling of their operations. We provide a formalization of an STM algorithm that is explicit about all aspects required for a...

Verifying Programs under Snapshot Isolation and Similar Relaxed Consistency Models

We present a static verification approach for programs running under snapshot isolation (SI) and similar relaxed transactional semantics. Relaxed conflict detection schemes such as snapshot isolation (SI) are used widely. Under SI, transactions are no longer guaranteed to be serializable, and the simplicity of reasoning sequentially within a transaction is lost. In this paper, we present an app...

On Parallel Snapshot Isolation and Release/Acquire Consistency

Parallel snapshot isolation (PSI) is a standard transactional consistency model used in databases and distributed systems. We argue that PSI is also a useful formal model for software transactional memory (STM) as it has certain advantages over other consistency models. However, the formal PSI definition is given declaratively by acyclicity axioms, which most programmers find hard to understand...

Verification of Snapshot Isolation in Transactional Memory Java Programs

This paper presents an automatic verification technique for transactional memory Java programs executing under snapshot isolation level. We certify which transactions in a program are safe to execute under snapshot isolation without triggering the write-skew anomaly, opening the way to run-time optimizations that may lead to considerable performance enhancements. Our work builds on a novel deep...

Snapshot Isolation Anomalies Detection in Software Transactional Memory

Some performance issues of transactional memory are caused by unnecessary abort situations where non serializable and yet non conflicting transactions are scheduled to execute concurrently. Smartly relaxing the isolation properties of transactions may overcome these issues and attain considerable performance improvements. However, it is known that relaxing isolation restrictions may lead to run...
